Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the difficult situation in the east of Ukraine, the president's press service said.

‘The interlocutors expressed concern over cases of ceasefire violations in the Donbas and agreed to make further efforts to settle the situation peacefully,’ says a report.

In this context, Merkel welcomed the adoption of a law that provides a special status for certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and a law on an amnesty passed by the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday.

The parties also discussed the possibility of continuing international negotiations in the so-called Normandy format.

The parties also covered trilateral negotiations in Brussels. Angela Merkel said she welcomed the decision on support for Ukraine from the EU that was approved on September 12.
