You're reading: Poroshenko: Association agreement with EU not to be signed before parliamentary elections in Ukraine

Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said that according to the most optimistic scenario, the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU could be signed after parliamentary elections Ukraine in October this year.

"I’m one hundred percent sure that the association agreement will not be signed before [parliamentary] elections," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on June 6.

Poroshenko said that there was the EU position on the procedure for conducting the elections.

"The position of the European Union is that holding fair elections and ensuring the free will of citizens during the parliamentary elections are absolutely necessary conditions for the signing of the agreement. Therefore, the most optimal time is immediately after the elections," he said.

Parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be held on October 28, 2012.
