Ukrainian president-elect Petro Poroshenko has told Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski about his plans for a peaceful solution to the crisis in the east of the country.

At a meeting in Warsaw, the newly elected president said that first of all he was going to put forward peace initiatives and to engage representatives of the east of the country in a dialogue, Poroshenko’s press service reported on June 4.

Poroshenko said believes that in order to establish a dialogue, it is necessary to hold elections to the Verkhovna Rada and local councils as soon as possible. This, he believes, will allow the election of new legitimate representatives from all regions of Ukraine so that all issues can be resolved peacefully.

According to Poroshenko’s press service, Komorowski expressed his support to Ukraine’s desire to preserve its territorial integrity, sovereignty and peace. He also said that Ukraine is now the focus of attention in Poland.

“The Polish president expressed his country’s full support for the European course, reforms and modernization of Ukraine. In particular, Poland is currently providing expert advice to Ukraine concerning the decentralization of power after the Polish model of local government,” the press service said.
