You're reading: Poroshenko hopes for display of solidarity with Ukraine at EU meeting on July 16

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has expressed the hope that the Italian presidency of the EU Council will help form an attitude of solidarity of the EU states with Ukraine, so they could jointly defend peace, freedom and democracy.

“The Ukrainian president has noted that such solidarity can be displayed at the upcoming European Council meeting on July 16,” Poroshenko’s press service reported on Saturday.

According to the press service, Renzi stressed that Europe and, in particular, Italy supports Poroshenko’s efforts to de-escalate and settle the situation in eastern Ukraine.

Poroshenko and Renzi exchanged invitations to visit their respective countries.
