You're reading: Poroshenko: If parliament hadn’t approve laws of Sept 16, Ukraine might have lost international support

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said that if the Verkhovna Rada hadn't adopted the law on amnesty and the law on the special status of some regions in the Donbas, it could have lost international support, but thanks to the adoption of these laws the conflict has de-escalated.

“One of the possible scenarios, which was possible if these laws
haven’t been approved: Ukraine could be blamed for hampering the peace
process,” the Ukrainian president said in an interview with Ukrainian TV
channels on Sept. 21.

According to Poroshenko, it could “let off the hook” people, who hope
to break off the ceasefire regime, blaming the Ukrainian side and
causing it to lose international support.

“Ukraine has done and will do its best to stick to the peace plan and to fulfill its obligations,” the president said.

Asked about the way in which the bills on amnesty and the special
status of some districts in Luhansk and Donetsk regions were approved,
the president said that it was up to parliament to choose the format for
the consideration of these bills.

Poroshenko also added that the present de-escalation of the conflict made it possible to liberate many prisoners.

“We’re in a de-escalation process now, whoever may say whatever… We’ve liberated a thousand prisoners,” the president said.
