Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has instituted a medal commemorating "the 70th anniversary of Ukraine's liberation from fascist invaders."

“The medal honors citizens on the occasion of the 70th anniversary Ukraine’s liberation from fascist invaders in the Great Patriotic War, fought from 1941 to 1945, in compliance with Point 25 of Part 1 of Article 106 of the Constitution,” says the relevant presidential decree, posted on the president’s website.

The Cabinet and the State Administration were instructed to issue the medals in cooperation with Central Bank and to provide the funding.

On Oct. 28 Ukraine marks 70 years since it was liberated from Nazi Germany.

The State Committee for Television and Radio earlier urged the Ukrainian media to follow recommendations by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory while covering the celebrations of the 70th anniversary since Nazi invaders were ousted from Ukraine.

“Historians insist on that the phrase ‘the ousting of Nazi invaders’ be used instead of the phrase “Ukraine’s liberation from fascist invaders.” The term “liberation” implies “will and freedom,” however Ukraine did not become free in 1944,” the State Television and Radio Committee said.
