Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has instructed security forces to raise the Ukrainian flag over Sloviansk, which was left by militiamen, the presidential press service has reported.

“Ukrainian armed forces chief of staff Viktor Muzhenko reported to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that militants came under mortar fire by Ukrainian troops and tried to break out of Sloviansk. One tank, two armored fighting vehicles, and two armored landing vehicles were destroyed,” the press service said.

The Army and National Guard intelligence units are currently working in Sloviansk, it said.

“The president instructed the chief of staff to reinstall the state flag over Sloviansk City Council,” it said.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov had reported earlier that a considerable number of gunmen had left Sloviansk, which was later confirmed by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.
