You're reading: Poroshenko: Protesters in eastern Ukraine understand only “language of strength”

Ukrainian parliamentarian and presidential candidate Petro Poroshenko warned that no negotiations should be held with the protesters in the eastern part of the country, as they are not going to reach a compromise but understand only "the language of strength".

Meeting with students of the Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National
University on Thursday, Poroshenko commented on the authorities’
intention to negotiate with the people seizing administrative buildings
and weapons in eastern regions of Ukraine, particularly in Sloviansk in
Donetsk region.

“How can you maintain a dialogue with such people? In what language
are you going to talk with them? They don’t understand Ukrainian, and
they don’t understand Russian either. You should talk with them only in
the language of strength,” Poroshenko said.

Police in Ukraine are demoralized, and therefore their morale should
be boosted, and those who have betrayed the law enforcement agencies
need to be replaced by patriots, whom there are enough of in Ukraine,
Poroshenko said.

Speaking about the murder of Horlivka City Council member Volodymyr
Rybak, Poroshenko said he had known him personally. He claimed that
Rybak had been tortured for two days and then killed only for wishing to
bring a Ukrainian flag to the City Council building. “This has been
done by terrorists, how can you talk with them?” he said.
