Subdivisions of the Russian army arrived as a helping hand to the illegal armed formations that operate on the east of Ukraine after the actions of the anti-terrorist operation's (ATO) forces were successful, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said.

“To save the terrorist gang, from Russia – through a part of the border we don’t control – came columns of heavy vehicles, a large amount of arms and military men from regular army units of Russia,” he said opening the National Security and Defense Council’s meeting in Kyiv on Aug. 28.

The president said that for last two months Ukrainian soldiers had achieved many victories during the ATO, significantly shrinking the ATO area.

“The territory that was occupied by the terrorists was reduced by three quarters, and pace of success of our Armed Forces, the National Guard with the participation of the border guards and other units, was impressive,” the president said.

He added that success of the ATO left no doubts that the operation would end quickly and the liberated population areas will return to the normal life.

“Mercenary amateurs, together with Russian army personnel, are trying to organize counter attacks on our Armed Forces,” he said.

The NSDC meeting is being held behind the closed doors, a correspondent of Interfax-Ukraine reported. Security Service Chief Valentyn Nalyvaichenko is reporting its results.
