Ukraine's president-elect, Petro Poroshenko, believes there should be no further delays in signing of the economic part of the Association Agreement of Ukraine and the European Union.
Poroshenko was quoted as saying by his press service that this document could be signed as soon as he was officially sworn in as president of Ukraine.
“The signing and enactment of the [Association] Agreement, which, in fact, is part of Ukraine’s modernization plan, as well as its implementation would help pursue anti-corruption measures and implement the reforms package within a very short period of time,” Poroshenko said.
The people of Ukraine cannot wait any longer, and the country’s authorities should act as promptly as possible, he said.
Hopefully, the European Union and its leaders, who have consistently supported the Ukrainians’ “European” choice and have declared their readiness to finalize the signing of the Association Agreement immediately after the presidential elections in Ukraine, will back this approach, Poroshenko said.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier, citing high-ranking European officials, that Poroshenko had told senior EU leaders that he wanted “some time before committing to a major economic and political deal with the bloc.”
However, according to the publication, officials say they have seen no evidence that the incoming Ukrainian president is “wavering” on the agreement.
