You're reading: Poroshenko says most Ukrainians are against federalization

Citizens of Ukraine wants the country to be united and are against its federalization, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.

“One hundred percent of Ukrainians now are for a unified state, a unified country. A constitutional majority of Ukrainians see it as a unitary country. No federalization! Poroshenko said in the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday, Nov. 27 while delivering an extraordinary address on Ukraine’s external and domestic situation.

“Some people in eastern or western [Ukraine] are advising federalization. You can advise, but Ukrainians are against it, and we are finally an administration that can hear and carry out the dreams of the people of Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko also said “an overwhelming majority” of Ukrainian citizens support the implementation of the association agreement with the European Union and the idea of Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“The number of Ukrainians who support Ukraine’s accession to NATO has increased 200-300 percent due to Russian aggression,” he said.

Poroshenko also spoke about “a record number of Ukrainians who believe that the Ukrainian language should stay the only state language in the country.”

“Ukraine has never been as united as it is now,” Poroshenko said.
