You're reading: Poroshenko says peacekeeping mission in Donbas to contribute to Minsk accords implementation

The deployment of a peacekeeping mission in Donbas will contribute to the implementation of the Minsk accords and will help prevent a further escalation in the region, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said.

Poroshenko said this during a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Lovfen, the Ukrainian president’s press service reported on May 8.

“The interlocutors recognized that the situation remained tense in Donbas, and discussed the ways to prevent the further escalation. Stefan Lovfen said that Minsk agreements should be fully implemented. Petro Poroshenko said that the deployment of the peacekeeping mission in Donbas would contribute to this,” the statement reads.

The Ukrainian president and the prime minister of Sweden coordinated actions on the liberalization the visa regime for Ukrainians during the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga.

“The Swedish prime minister congratulated the president of Ukraine on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and noted the significant contribution of Ukrainians to the victory,” the press service said.
