Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko believes that Ukraine's non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council will help to bring peace to the Ukrainian territory and return the territories occupied by Russia, including the Donbas and Crimea.

“I sincerely congratulate the Ukrainian people on this international and diplomatic achievement of Ukraine. I have no doubt that it will help us to bring about the long-awaited peace, will contribute to the restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty over all the territories occupied by Russia both in the Donbas and Crimea,” Poroshenko said in his video address to the Ukrainian people made public on Oct. 15.

The president stressed that the vote in the UN showed the level of international support for Ukraine.

“This time the victory is especially valuable, because we achieved it in a situation when the world stands before the most difficult challenges of recent decades. Ukraine has become the object of foreign aggression and part of our territory is occupied by Russia, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council,” Poroshenko said.

Therefore, the membership in the Security Council gives new possibilities for defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also puts more responsibility on Ukraine for maintaining peace and stability in the world, he said.

“A key mission of our membership in the Security Council will be to resolutely uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, developed with the participation of Ukraine even 70 years ago. I am talking about the absolute and eternal values, which are the basis of our world order – the peaceful settlement of conflicts, respect for the principles of justice and international law,” Poroshenko said.

According to the president, Ukraine will pay considerable attention to the reform of the UN Security Council and countering the misuse of the veto by UN Security Council permanent members, one of whom is the aggressor against Ukraine.
