President Petro Poroshenko has held talks with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the introduction of a new international security format with guarantees for Ukraine.

“The parties discussed the necessity to introduce a new security
format with effective guarantees for Ukraine,” the presidential press
service said.

“Poroshenko informed Steinmeier about the implementation of the peace
plan to settle the situation in eastern Ukraine and about the
declaration of ceasefire in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions,” the press
service said.

Poroshenko said that the ceasefire is violated by the other side.
“Eight incidents were reported last night. One serviceman was killed and
seven others were wounded,” he said.

Poroshenko proposed launching the work on Ukrainian-German projects
to restore the economy in eastern Ukraine and to create jobs there.

The Ukrainian president also thanked Germany for supporting the
European Union foreign ministers’ conclusion on the completion of the
first phase in the action plan for visa liberalization between Ukraine
and the EU. He also requested aid in the earliest possible introduction
of visa-free travel regime with the EU for all Ukrainian citizens,” the
press service said.

Poroshenko thanked Germany for assisting and supporting Ukraine in this time of trials.

The German foreign minister welcomed the results of the second
meeting of the trilateral contact group in Donetsk, saying that the
success was due to efforts made by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo
Klimkin, former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, Russian Ambassador to
Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov and the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe’s special representative Heidi Tagliavini.

The talks on the terms leading to a truce, to the militia’s surrender
and its consent to enlarge the OSCE’s monitoring mission, are a major
step forward, Steinmeier said.
