NEW YORK - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko finds it necessary to take steps to return the role of a mechanism of guaranteeing global security to the United Nations.

“We will be taking resolute steps to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine, on the one hand, and on the other, at the UN level we should propose changes that will return the historic mission or role to the UN, including the UN Security Council, as a mechanism of guaranteeing global security,” he said to journalists after arriving in New York for the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

He said that Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council is blocking steps that the Security Council is trying to take.

He felt that in these circumstances it is necessary either to increase the effectiveness of the UN or create new security mechanisms.

“I am very pleased that this position of Ukraine, my position is supported by a big number of UN countries. France acted as the co-initiator. Yesterday it was supported by Germany. And many UN member-countries today want us to reform the organization today,” Poroshenko stressed.
