Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has met with Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb as part of his visit to the EU institutions in Brussels, the press service of the head of state has reported.

During the meeting, special attention was paid to the events in Ukraine and possible ways to stabilize the current situation in the eastern regions of the country. Stubb also supported Poroshenko’s peace initiatives.

“The sides agreed that the Ukrainian president’s initiative opens the possibility of resolving the situation by peaceful means and expressed hope that in the next few days every effort will be made for its successful implementation,” reads the report.

Poroshenko expressed concern about numerous violations of the ceasefire by militants. In this regard, the sides stressed the need to take all necessary measures, including further sanctions, “if Russia makes no real steps to reduce tensions in the region.”

Stubb also welcomed the expected signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, which will be a powerful incentive for Finnish investments in the Ukrainian economy.

Poroshenko confirmed his commitment to conducting systemic reforms to build a modern European Ukraine.
