Ukrainian, not Soviet traditions will be introduced in the system of military ranks, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said at a meeting with 'volunteer assault forces' in Kyiv on July 27.

“During our discussion I liked a lot the initiative to withdraw from the Soviet army. We need to introduce [our] own, new Ukrainian traditions, including new Ukrainian ranks,” Poroshenko said.

The initiative to change ‘junior lieutenant’ to ‘khorunzhy’ is completely in line with Ukrainian traditions and the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Ukraine, the president said.

Poroshenko also said he supported the introduction of new military rank ‘brigadier general’.
