You're reading: Poroshenko supports restructuring of bank credits issued to citizens

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that he believes restructuring bank credits which were issued to Ukrainian citizens is fair.

“If this is a burden which lies on the whole economy and society, we must fairly distribute the burden: not only rely on depositors, not only those who took credits, but to allow them to have a certain restructuring, despite the fact that they received property. Not to write off [the credits], but to give a certain restructuring,” Poroshenko said in an interview with ICTV channel late on March 28.

Poroshenko also spoke about the abuse of office by some bank owners who embezzled the funds entrusted to them by depositors.

“As president I initiated a law under which not only beneficiaries of banks, but persons affiliated with them are published. No one will be able to hide from criminal liability,” he said, adding that he believed this is a normal, civilized rule agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
