Ukraine currently cannot do without conscription, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.

“We now don’t have a choice. We now have to give up the plans to introduce full contract service in the army for the time being,” he said in his extraordinary address on the external and domestic situation of Ukraine given in the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday, Nov. 27.

“No matter how unpopular that may sound, our neighbors have adjusted our plans for us and we currently cannot do without conscription,” he said.

The president also said that “some societal inventory is unavoidable in reasonable limits.”

“Even initial military training should become one of the main subjects in schools. It lays down the foundation of military-patriotic education and we should revive this,” Poroshenko said.
