Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has held a meeting in Ottawa with representatives of the Ukrainian community in Canada, the press service of the head of state reported early on Thursday 18.

According to the report, Poroshenko thanked the Ukrainian-Canadian community ‘for the contribution to the development of a strong and independent Ukraine.’

He also said that the Verkhovna Rada and the European Parliament simultaneously ratified the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement on September 16.

‘It is the last farewell to the Soviet Union. Nothing and nobody will stop us on our civilization path of state development,’ reads the statement.

According to Poroshenko, ‘war cannot be a justification for the lack of reform.’

‘We must overcome corruption and finally elect a new pro-Ukrainian parliament,’ he said.

‘We will win this war, because it’s our true struggle for independence and peace on Ukrainian land,’ Poroshenko said.

The Ukrainian community in Canada, in turn, gave the president paintings made by Canadian children for Ukrainian servicemen who are now defending Ukraine in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
