The headquarters of presidential candidate Petro Poroshenko has said it hopes that the next Ukrainian president will be elected in the first round, scheduled for May 25 this year.

“We consider it important that the Ukrainian president be elected in the first round. We ask all candidates who support democratic and European values, but whose rating and level of support is currently not higher than 3-5 percent … [to] make a crucial step and encourage citizens to vote for a presidential candidate who has a real chance to win in the first round,” the head of Poroshenko’s election headquarters, UDAR MP Vitaliy Kovalchuk, said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He also said he hoped that the newly elected head of state would be declared the next day after the election.

“We hope that Poroshenko will win in the first round and the president will be elected in Ukraine. And it will be announced at least no later than May 26 or 27,” Kovalchuk said.
