Ukrainian presidential candidate and MP Sergiy Tigipko has called on the country's government to step down following the May 2 events in Odesa.

“The government that bears political responsibility for the deaths in Odesa must resign,” Tigipko said in a statement on May 5.

The Odesa tragedy has confirmed that a civil conflict is about to erupt in Ukraine, he said.

“This bloodshed must be stopped immediately as long as we have not
crossed the final line,” he said, adding that the use of military force
would not help maintain the country’s unity.

Tigipko also spoke in favor of launching negotiations with
authoritative people, representatives of the intelligentsia and elders
who enjoy trust and respect in the country’s regions.

“They may come up with ideas how to sort out this situation and influence radically minded citizens,” he said.

There is also a need to start preparations for the second round of
international talks in Geneva concerning the Ukrainian crisis because
“it will be difficult for us to cope with the situation without the
support and mediation of world powers,” Tigipko said.

Furthermore, the presidential candidate called for a comprehensive
and independent inquiry into security services’ actions or lack of
action in Odesa on May 2, as well as in other cities in southeastern
Ukraine, where people have died recently.
