You're reading: Presidents of Ukraine, UAE sign several agreements

A ceremony to mark the signing of a number of agreements with the participation of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and President of the United Arab Emirates Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was held in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

According to the Ukrainian president’s press service, an agreement was signed between Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

This agreement suggests creating a legal basis for the efficient cooperation of the relevant agencies of both states in criminal matters. The agreement lays down the mechanism of interaction between the courts, prosecution agencies and other competent authorities of Ukraine and the UAE to prevent and investigate crimes, as well as determining the ways to confiscate property and proceeds of crime.

The two states also concluded an agreement on mutual legal assistance in civil and commercial matters.

The agreement is aimed at creating an efficient inter-state mechanism of legal protection for the parties, providing them with an opportunity to go to court and apply to other competent authorities of Ukraine and the UAE, as well as file lawsuits and defend their rights and interests in civil cases, the presidential Web site reported.

In addition, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates signed an extradition agreement, which regulates the cooperation of the competent authorities of Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates for the purpose of criminal prosecution or enforcement against those who are trying to evade punishment for their crimes and are staying on the territory of one of the two states.

An agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the government of the United Arab Emirates on air transportation was also signed.

This agreement is aimed at creating a legal framework for regular flights between Ukraine and the UAE. In particular, this agreement will lay down the procedure for regulating international flights, designating airlines, as well as the mutual recognition of crew members; will set the conditions for granting and withdrawing permits to air carriers for conducting regular flights. The agreement also provides an opportunity to airlines to enter into code-sharing arrangements, including with airlines of a third country.

The Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the United Arab Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in higher education and scientific research.

Besides, the Ukrainian Education Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare of the United Arab Emirates on cooperation in sports.
