The main department on consumer rights, and fighting corruption and criminality in transport and military-industrial complex of the Prosecutor General's Office on March 23 opened a criminal case against officials of the state-run Izmail Sea Commercial Port (Odesa region) accused of abuse of office.
As the Prosecutor General’s Office reported on its Web site on March 26, the accused did not use other companies to clear the premises and territory of the port of the remains of polluting cargos, but instead carried out the work the expense of the port. Such actions cost the state enterprise a total of over Hr 10 million.
The pre-trial investigation under this criminal case is continuing, the text read.
Izmail Sea Commercial Port is one of the most modern and highly mechanized ports on the Danube. Due to its favorable geographical position, it is a gateway to other European countries, and an important transportation link that connecting the countries of Central and Northern Europe with the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
It is developing today as a multi-trade port for the transshipment of iron ore, coal, coke, ferrous and nonferrous metals, paper and pulp, fertilizers, sawed timber, and general cargo. The port can currently handle up to 8.5 million tonnes of cargo per year.
