You're reading: Protests in Ukraine parliament over Russia fleet

Thousands of opposition demonstrators rallied outside the Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday and inside the building the Speaker was pelted with eggs in protest at the extension to the Russian navy's stay in Crimea.

The chamber of the Ukrainian parliament filled with smoke as smoke bombs were released and Speaker Volodymyr Litvyn took shelter under his umbrella as eggs rained down on him.

The protests were over an agreement last week between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev to extend the stay of Russia’s Black Sea fleet in Ukraine’s Crimea until 2042.
