You're reading: Psychiatric evaluation establishes pilot Savchenko’s sanity – lawyer

Ukrainian pilot Nadia Savchenko's lawyer, Mark Feygin, has said, citing media reports, that his client underwent a psychiatric evaluation and that she was declared sane.

“The media have reported the completion of Nadia Savchenko’s evaluation at the Serbsky Institute. She was declared sane. The defense team hasn’t been officially notified yet,” he wrote on Twitter.

He assumed that “there’s no need in keeping Savchenko isolated any longer, as the elections are over.”

“It only proves that there was no need for inpatient [treatment],” the lawyer said.

He noted that “there is no evidence of Savchenko’s guilt.”

“It can only be trumped up by investigators, just as her ‘crossing the border,'” Feygin added.

It was reported earlier that Savchenko, a 31-year-old navigator, was fighting with the Aidar volunteer battalion in eastern Ukraine when she was captured by illegal armed units near the town of Schastia, a suburb of Luhansk, in June. It turned out on July 8 that Savchenko was kept at a detention facility in Voronezh, Russia. On Sept. 24, she was brought to detention center No. 6 in Moscow. Investigators insisted that Savchenko had to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Savchenko denies her guilt and says she was abducted on Ukrainian territory.

On Oct. 27, the Basmanny Court of Moscow decided to extend the custody of the Ukrainian pilot until Feb. 13, 2015.

Savchenko topped the party ticket of the Batkivschyna Party in the early parliamentary elections in Ukraine held on Oct. 26. According to preliminary reports, Batkivschyna passes the 5 percent electoral threshold.
