Strasbourg - The Venice Commission should study the events in Ukraine on February 22 and not limit itself to the topic of Crimea's accession to Russia, head of the Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Alexei Pushkov said.

“We think now that it is important for the Venice Commission to deal
with the issue as to how much the events in Ukraine are in line with the
principles, on which the activities of the Council of Europe are based,
and what pre-history of the deep international crisis, in which we have
found ourselves, is,” Pushkov said when speaking at the PACE session
opening on Monday.

The commission has received a request to access the results of the
Crimean referendum, Pushkov said. However, for now no request regarding
what happened in Ukraine on February 22 [when provisions of the
agreement concluded between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and
opposition on February 21 were violated] has been submitted to the
commission, he said.

“The agreement, which should have confirmed the principles of the
constitutional state, was signed on February 21. It was signed by three
foreign ministers of three leading European powers. But the provisions
of this agreement are not implemented,” Pushkov said.
