You're reading: Pyatt says it’s not good that EU, US imposed sanctions on Russia, but Kyiv did not

While Western firms sustain losses from sanctions imposed on Russia to protect Ukraine's sovereignty, Ukrainian businesses continue to make a profit, which is not the best situation, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt has said.

He said in an interview with the Focus weekly magazine that it was crucial that Ukrainian decisions in the field of economy and trade did not undermine the influence that should be exerted by European and U.S. sanctions.

It’s not the best situation when Ukrainian firms get commercial benefits, while European or U.S. firms are forced to sustain losses as a result of actions in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Pyatt said.

He said that the principle of imposing sanctions was fundamentally important to the United States: they must be introduced as transparently as possible.
