ZAPORIZHIA – Quarantine has been introduced in the village of Voznesenka, Melitopol district, Zaporizhia region, after the owners of a cow infected with anthrax sold its meat in the trade network, the press service of Melitopol City Council has reported.

“A single case of the death of cattle has been reported in the
village of Voznesenka (Melitopol district). Laboratory studies have
shown that a one-and-a-half-year-old heifer was infected with anthrax,”
reads the statement.

According to the press service, this issue was discussed at an
emergency visiting session of Zaporizhia Regional State Administration,
Melitopol District State Administration and Melitopol City Council.

“The villagers tried to sell the meat before the cause of the
animal’s death was determined. According to law enforcement officers,
two kilograms of dangerous beef were purchased by residents of
Melitopol, and they managed to eat it almost fully. Ten more kilograms
reached one of the recreation centers in Kyrylivka,” the press service
said.

Melitopol Mayor Serhiy Walter said at the meeting that measures had been taken to find those who bought the meat.

“These people were found on Saturday, August 18. Doctors immediately
examined them and prescribed preventive medical treatment,” he said.

The authorities in Melitopol said that due to the death of a cow from
anthrax controls had been tightened over the sale of meat and milk
products in shops and markets in Melitopol district.
