Ukrainian language defenders have called on all Ukrainians to gather on the Independence Day, on August 24, near the Ukrainian House in Kyiv in protest against the signature of the language law by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

“We should hold a national congress on August 24 and we are calling on all Ukrainians that are not indifferent to the issue, all conscious public organizations of Ukraine to protect the Ukrainian language,” Roman Lapuda, an activist of the protest against the passing of the language bill by the parliament, said.

In turn, another activist of the protest, Iryna Bondar, told journalists that the protesters did not expect that the president would sign the law and hoped that he respects Ukrainians and loves Ukraine’s history.
