You're reading: Red Cross says checking Russian humanitarian convoy route for security

A Russian humanitarian aid convoy will set off for its destination in Luhansk, eastern Ukraine, as soon as the International Committee of the Red Cross has made sure that its planned route is secure for it to take, an ICRC spokesman said on Aug. 20.

The route has been approved by Ukraine and Russia, and the two
countries have also reached an agreement that the trucks carrying the
aid are to take this route to return to Russia after delivering the
cargo, Andre Loersch told the 112 Ukraina television channel.

Loersch said the ICRC would take responsibility for the convoy and
that an ICRC team had left for Luhansk to explore the route from the
point of view of security.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian State Border Guard Service spokesman Oleh
Slobodian told 112 Ukraina that, as of Wednesday morning, the convoy had
still not completed border crossing formalities as border guards were
still checking the cargo against official lists accompanying it.
