You're reading: Registration of Cyrillic domains in com.ua and kiev.ua zones to start on Oct. 19

Ukraine on October 19 will start registering IDN-Cyrillic domains (Internationalized Domain Names) in the com.ua and kiev.ua zones, according to the website of Hostmaster, which administers the .ua domain.

According to the company, to protect against cyber squatters (buying attractive domain names for subsequent resale), IDN registration will take place in three stages.

The first stage, which will last until November 17, will allow the owners of word Cyrillic trademarks and well-known logos to register Cyrillic domains in com.ua and kiev.ua after submitting the relevant documents. The second stage, which will last from November 19 until December 19, 2010, will allow the IDN to be registered for 10 years.

The president of Internet Invest Ltd. (one of the largest national domain registrars Imena.UA, hosting provider MiroHost.net, Kyiv), Oleksandr Olshansky, told Interfax-Ukraine that his company has not yet signed an agreement on the right to delegate IDNs, the final version of which will be presented on October 9.
