You're reading: Report: Crimean Berkut police on Perekopsky isthmus to prevent armed invasion

Crimean Berkut riot police forces are on the Perekopsky isthmus connecting the Crimean peninsula with mainland Ukraine, a source in law enforcement told Interfax-Ukraine.

“On Thursday afternoon, five buses, each carrying about 30 Crimean Berkut officers, moved towards the isthmus to prevent the introduction of Ukrainian armed forces to Crimea,” the source said.

Most likely, Berkut officers are already on the Perekopsky isthmus, he said.

It was reported earlier that armed men were obstructing traffic into Crimea.

The roadblocks at the entry to Crimea, which were put up by the gunmen near the towns of Henichesk and Dzhankoy on Thursday, were removed last night, and only traffic police checkpoints remain there, a source in law enforcement agencies told Interfax later.
