A commission for the issues of renaming and monuments of Kyiv City State Administration has decided to rename Kyiv metro station Respublikanskansky Stadion (Republican Stadium) into Olympiyska.

"The commission unanimously supported the name Olympiyska Station. It’s natural, because the Republican Stadium was renamed into Olympiysky long ago. Hence the name of the metro station has become outdated," a member of the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko faction in the city council, member of the commission for renaming and memorials and head of Kyiv City Council’s commission for culture and tourism, Oleksandr Bryhynets, has said.

"In addition, the station’s name Olympiyska will be more easily understood by thousands of tourists who will arrive in Kyiv to attend the matches of the Euro 2012 Football Championship, and each one will watch the games at Olympiysky National Sports Complex," Bryhynets’ press service quoted him as saying on Thursday.

The Respublikanskansky Stadion Metro Station opened on December 19, 1981 and was named so due to its location near the Republican Stadium. In 1996, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma renamed the stadium into Olympiysky National Sports Complex.
