You're reading: Resolution calling for Savchenko’s release submitted to US Congress

U.S. Congressmen Sander Levin, Marcy Kaptur, Michael Fitzpatrick, Mike Quigley, and Bill Pascrell, all members of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, introduced a bipartisan resolution on Jan. 26 calling on the release of Ukrainian pilot and a member of the Verkhovna Rada Nadia Savchenko.

This resolution is part of the global community’s effort to bring attention to her situation and demand her immediate release, according to a statement on the official website of Senator Sander Levin.

“We continue to call on Russian authorities to immediately release Nadia Savchenko from custody. We are gravely concerned by reports of her ill health since the commencement of a hunger strike on Dec. 14, 2014, now into its seventh week. We are equally troubled by Ms. Savchenko’s lack of access to her counsel and adequate medical attention,” the statement reads.

The congressmen demand that Russia abide by its international obligations and the rule of law, and join the United States Department of State in calling for Nadia Savchenko’s immediate release.
