A European rights watchdog group has urged Ukraine's leaders to increase protection of media freedom and speed up a probe into the disappearance of a journalist.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, urged authorities during a visit to Ukraine on Tuesday to properly investigate the disappearance of Vasyl Klymentyev.

Klymentyev, the editor of a weekly newspaper, went missing in August. His deputy said Klymentyev had been threatened after refusing to take money to halt the publication of a story about a prosecutor allegedly taking bribes.

International media watchdogs have voiced concern over the status of press freedom in Ukraine since the February election.
