You're reading: Russia artificially changing demographics of Crimea

Refat Chubarov, the lawmaker from Petro Poroshenko Bloc and chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars has said that Russia is pursuing a policy of artificial settlement in Crimea.

“Russia pursues a policy of artificial settlement in Crimea. It will displace the population which it considers disloyal, firstly, the Crimean Tatars, who remain loyal to Ukraine, as well as those who do not accept the occupation,” said Chubarov on Nov.11 after the parliament session, the faction’s press service reported.

“On the other hand, under various pretexts it will increase the population coming from the mainland [Russia]. This is already happening in law enforcement and punitive agencies, the Investigative Committee, the Federal Security Service, the Prosecutor’s Office, the courts,”

Law enforcement agencies have brought in thousands of employees of these structures and their families, Chubarov said.

He also said that he is currently raising the issue of Crimea lacking 10,000 managers at the official level.

“So, the occupants are artificially changing the demographic, ethnic and religious composition of the territory they occupy,” Chubarov added.
