Russian $7 billion gas bill dampens Ukraine's glee at shale deal

The chief executive of Ukraine's state gas company Naftogaz, Oleg Dubina (L), and the chief executive officer of Russian energy giant Gazprom, Alexei Miller (R), sign on January 19, 2009 a 10-year agreement to provide Russian gas for the Ukrainian market as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (C) watches with his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshchenko in Moscow. The agreement continues to cause reverberations. Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year prison sentence for signing the deal, which obligated Ukraine to purchase certain amounts of gas each year.
