Belgorod - Russian and Ukrainian border guards have been put on high alert amid fears that a man suspected of killing six people after going on a shooting spree in the Russian city of Belgorod on Monday could attempt to cross into Ukraine, a spokesman for regional law enforcement agencies told Interfax-AVN.

“The measure was enacted yesterday both for Russian border guards and their Ukrainian colleagues. It will most likely stay in force until the criminal is tracked down and detained,” the spokesman said.

Russian and Ukrainian border guards have already held a series of meetings to coordinate their efforts as part of the manhunt, he said.

They are working “in close cooperation with law enforcement services engaged in the search for the killer,” he said.

A man fired shots at a crowd near a shop selling hunting firearms in Belgorod on April 22, killing six people. He then fled by car.

A criminal investigation was opened on counts of murder. The suspect was identified as a Belgorod resident, who was released from prison a year ago after serving a sentence for robbery.

Police believe that the suspect can be armed with two Tigr hunting rifles.
