You're reading: Russian and Ukrainian officers to monitor Donetsk airport situation

Officers from the headquarters of the Joint Control and Coordination Center (JCCC) in eastern Ukraine will conduct a two-day monitoring mission, from May 26 to May 28, on the premises of Donetsk airport, a Russian representative at JCCC has said.

“Acting on the initiative of the head of the Russian office at JCCC,
Col. Gen. Alexander Lentsov, groups of observers plan to deploy on both
sides of the contact line in a mirror-like manner. Officers from the
Russian Armed Forces will work on Donetsk’s side, and representatives of
the Ukrainian Armed Forces from JCCC on the side of Avdiyivka,” he told
reporters on Tuesday.

Lentsov himself said that “situation monitoring at the airport is
designed as a kind of counterbalance against a tendency toward a further
escalation of the armed confrontation.”

“It is important for us to see everything with our own eyes – from
where gunfire originates and who opens it, as well as to thoroughly
investigate the thoughtless actions of officials resulting in human
casualties and injuries, as well as the destruction of city
infrastructure,” he said.
