Rostov-on-Don - The Russian border checkpoint 'Donetsk' is being shelled from the Ukrainian territory, Vasily Malayev, a spokesman for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) border department for the Rostov region, has told Interfax.

“The Russian border checkpoint is being shelled now. A lot of people who were at the checkpoint when the fire was opened have been evacuated,” Malayev said.

Casualties have been averted due to timely and professional actions by border checkpoint officials, he said.

“The ‘Donetsk’ border checkpoint’s operations have been stopped,” he said.

Local law enforcement agencies had told Interfax earlier that artillery fire had been opened upon the Russian border checkpoint ‘Donetsk’.

“Preliminary reports indicate that fire was opened upon the Russian checkpoint at about 2.50 p.m. Moscow time and that about ten artillery rounds hit an area adjacent to the checkpoint and exploded,” an Interfax source said.
