Russian senators stand ready to cooperate with the new Ukrainian parliament, Vladimir Dzhabarov, acting chairman of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee and chairman of the Temporary Commission for Monitoring the Situation in Ukraine, told the Commission members.

“We are prepared to cooperate with the new Verkhovna Rada. Russia is open for interaction. The contacts earlier established between the State Duma and the Federation Council on the one hand and the Verkhovna Rada on the other will hopefully be re-launched in some format,” Dzhabarov said.

He confessed, however, that it was hard for him to imagine how this would work out.

The new Ukrainian parliament has become more radical-minded, he said, noting that Russia is ready for cooperation with Ukrainian lawmakers anyway.

“Russia has recognized these elections, although there are serious queries about how they were held. If such elections had been held in some other country, in Russia for instance, the West would have never recognized them as legitimate. Nevertheless, the West and Europe have recognized the Ukrainian elections as valid,” Dzhabarov said.
