You're reading: Russian senators to send observers to Crimean referendum

The Federation Council commission for monitoring the situation in Ukraine will set up a mission of observers who on Mar. 30 will travel to the Crimea which will be holding a referendum on its status. Such a proposal was approved at a session of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee.

“Our colleagues will travel to observe the Crimean referendum to
ensure it is accurate, legitimate and expresses the will of all Crimean
people,” Committee head Mikhail Margelov said at the session on Monday.

The Federation Council set up the Ukraine monitoring commission
comprised of senators from the Russian regions bordering on Ukraine, he
recalled.

“We shall continually monitor the situation in Ukraine. In addition,
we shall set up a group of experts well acquainted with the problems of
Ukraine, the Crimea and Sevastopol, we need to know the origins of the
situation. The commission will be working legally, making legitimate
decisions that will help normalize the situation in Ukraine,” Margelov
said.
