You're reading: Russian strategic aircraft move into new patrolling areas of Black Sea

Russian Air Force strategic aircraft have moved to new patrolling routes above the Black Sea, a representative of the regional law enforcement authorities told Interfax-AVN on June 4.

“The involvement of strategic aircraft in the fleet combat training is a consequence of geopolitical transformations in the region created by the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation and the expansion of territorial waters,” he said.

The intensified combat training of Russian strategic aircraft “is not related to the events evolving in southeastern Ukraine,” he underscored.

As to the daily tasks of Black Sea airspace control, they are accomplished by seaborne aircraft, the source noted.

“For instance, Sukhoi Su-24 aircraft of the Black Sea Fleet control the maritime picture and practice strikes on simulated enemy warships in collaboration with surface action groups and coastal missile units,” he continued.

The source also noted that 2 NATO ships – the French Navy frigate Surcouf and the U.S. Navy cruiser Vella Gulf – are currently staying in the Black Sea.
