You're reading: Russian troops take over Novoazovsk and several localities in south of Donetsk region

Russian troops on Wednesday, Aug. 27 took control of the town of Novoazovsk and a number of other populated localities in the Novoazovsk, Starobesheve and Amvrosiyivka districts in Donetsk region, the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has reported.

“Yesterday, Russian servicemen took control of the town of Novoazovsk and a number of populated localities in the Novoazovsk, Starobesheve and Amvrosiyivka districts,” reads a statement posted on the Twitter page of the NSDC on Thursday, Aug. 28.

The council reported that “yesterday the outskirts of Novoazovsk and the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were shelled with Grad launchers from Russian territory and then attacked by two columns of Russian troops and equipment.”

The report says that the counter-offensive by the units of the Russian Armed Forces and illegal armed groups in the southeastern part of Donetsk region continues.

NSDC added that to save the lives of Ukrainian military and regroup forces, the command of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) withdrew from Novoazovsk units of the combined ATO forces, the Interior Ministry and the State Border Service of Ukraine.
