Odesa governor Mikheil Saakashvili has suggested that Odesa city police should be completely disbanded and restructured due to the arrest of its head who was caught red handed receiving a bribe.

“Yesterday, head of Odesa police was arrested red handed when receiving a bribe for protection. It confirmed what I’ve been always saying – Odesa police is a well organized criminal syndicate. I think they should be completely disbanded and restructured,” Saakashvili said on Facebook on Aug. 28.

He said that, together with Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, he will create a special detachment inside the police to battle corruption in the regional administration and law enforcement agencies.

“For now we need to continue arresting not only fall guys, but as it was with head of the region’s military enlistment office and police head yesterday, high-ranking officials. Particularly, the regional administration needs a similar cleanse as well,” Saakashvili said.
