The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has confirmed the arrest of Tetiana Rud, the chief of the State Inspectorate for Control over Prices.

The SBU press center told Interfax-Ukraine that officers from the SBU and the Prosecutor General’s Office had detained Rud on Nov. 9.

The Ukrainian Economy Ministry and the State Inspectorate for Control over Prices declined to comment on this situation.

Rud was appointed to the post under a government resolution of March 31, 2010.

In June 2010, Economy Minister Vasyl Tsushko criticized the State Inspectorate for Control over Prices for attracting private evaluating companies to monitor the dynamics of the cost of goods and services.

He said that the regional units of the inspectorate, by attracting private firms, had weakened controls over the price situation in the country. The minister then gave a month to the inspectorate’s management to resolve this issue, threatening to dismiss inspectorate officials.
