You're reading: SBU detains Russian spies in Kherson region

The employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) office in Kherson region detained last night an intelligence group of the Russian Armed Forces, which had penetrated into Kherson region from Crimea, bypassing checkpoints, the SBU's press center has reported.

According to the report, the purpose of the group was to study the situation and receive data on the redeployment and the state of readiness of the units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Kherson region.

“A group of foreigners conducted intelligence regarding the third air defense missile battalion (Kakhovka), the 208th air defense missile brigade, and a subdivision of the 79th automobile brigade. The leader of the group is a citizen of the Russian Federation, a military intelligence officer of the Russian Armed Forces, born in 1981, a native of the Ryazan region. The detainee unlawfully used the passport of Ukrainian citizen Yevhen Serhiyovych Arbuzov, born in 1986,” reads the statement.

After his detention, the group’s leader admitted that he was collecting intelligence data, including on the location of checkpoints of border troops and the military units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

SBU is investigating this case in the order established by the legislation of Ukraine and informed the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry according to the Ukrainian-Russian Consular Convention.
