The beginning of the academic year in the populated areas within the hostility zone in eastern Ukraine has so far been postponed until Oct. 1, Pavlo Poliansky, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Education and Science, has said.

“Recently, the Education and Science Ministry held a collegium … it was decided to postpone the start of the academic year for some of the educational institutions in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. So far we have a rough date: Oct. 1. This is optimal. It may shift for the better, but unfortunately, it may also shift for the worse,” he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Aug. 29.

“At any rate, the academic year will not begin in these populated areas until they have been liberated,” Poliansky said.
