You're reading: Soldiers, border guards gain in popularity among professions in Ukraine

What a difference a year of revolution and war makes.

Soldiers or border guards have entered the ranks of the most promising and respected professions in Ukraine, right behind the traditional leaders of information technology specialists and doctors.

These are the results of a survey conducted by the Research Center of the HR portal HeadHunter (hh.ua) in September 2014 and published on Feb. 20. The survey involved 1,200 respondents.

According to the study, the attitude to the men in military uniform in Ukraine has substantially changed over last year – the number of the respondents who say that a military occupation is possible increased eleven-fold.

Today every fourth respondent considers the future of the country without soldiers as impossible, especially since Russia launched a war against Ukraine a year ago.

By comparison, less than two years ago, soldiers were ranked as one of the five least promising occupations in Ukraine. The authors of the study explain it by recent social and political changes in the life of the country.

“The prestige of the
profession is determined by its level of salary, social status and respect in
the society, as well as by the demand for professionals in the market. The
phenomenon of increasing prestige of military specialties is explained by the
socio-political situation in the country,” Ruslana Berezovska, representative for hh.ua said.

Law enforcement officials area also more popular (Interior Ministry). Their popularity increased eight times over last year.

The Top 10 of the most promising occupations in Ukraine, according to the study, is as follows:

1. programmers, IT specialists;

2. doctors;

3. soldiers, secret service agents, border guards;

4. engineers (different fields);

5. entrepreneur, businessmen;

6. blue-collar occupations;

7. law enforcement officials;

8. journalists;

9. lawyers;

10. farmers.

Meanwhile the Ukraine’s Ministry of Economic Development
forecast for 2015-2018 shows that the further development of the economy will
lead to increased demand for professionals in the field of physical, mathematical
and engineering sciences.

The information field and telecommunications will
continue actively develop, the demand for IT-specialists will increase. The
adaptation of domestic enterprises to EU standards will lead to additional need
of workers in metallurgical and engineering professions.

The most in-demand occupations
in Ukraine differ from those in western countries, Berezovska admits. For
example, according to the portal CareerCast.com the best profession in the
United States at the end of 2013 was the profession of actuary (a specialist in
insurance mathematics), a bioengineer at the second position. Third place was
occupied by software developers.

“In Ukraine, for
several years the first place confidently take IT-specialists”, she adds.
